Holmen Market Insight May 2018
GDPR… Guess you have heard about it already, right? The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will be enforceable from May 25th 2018, will replace the current Data Protection Directive of 1995. GDPR is intended to enhance and unify data protection for all individuals living in an EU member state, and to simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU. And GDPR really is personal, it’s about how the individual’s personal data is acquired, stored, secured and processed.
And of course, a lot has happened on this topic in the past 23 years, including the rise of Internet and new online opportunities. Actually, Amazon was founded way back in 1994 – but it did not go online until in 1995, the same year as the current personal data directive came into force. Facebook launched in 2004, Youtube was founded in 2005, Twitter in 2006 and Instagram as late as 2010.
Evidently, many online platforms which we today very much take for granted have really only been around for a very short period of time. However, social media has a history dating back to the 1970’s and Classmates is in fact widely regarded as one of the Internet’s earliest social networking sites. It was intended to help users find old friends from kindergarten, high school and college, and it was launched back in November 1995. Today, social media marketing is an industry worth billions of dollars and GDPR will of course have a massive impact on this business.
At Holmen, we also take GDPR very seriously – you can learn all about our personal data policy on holmen.com/personaldata.
